Flu shots now available - Schedule or walk in today!
It's not too early to think about the flu shot—in fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), October is the ideal month to receive flu immunization. By receiving it now, your body develops protection before flu outbreaks begin.
Where can I get a flu shot near me?
Flu shots are currently available at Open Door for both patients and non-patients. Flu shot appointments can be scheduled in Muncie and Anderson by calling (765) 286-7000. Appointments are recommended for shorter wait time, but walk-ins are welcome. The flu shot is available at all primary care and pediatrics locations, Open Door Urgent Care, and the Mobile Unit.
How much does the flu shot cost? Are there free flu shots?
The flu shot is $25. For those with insurance, it will be billed. Children covered by Medicaid/HIP or who are uninsured receive a no-cost flu shot through Open Door’s Vaccines for Children program. The program is available at primary care and pediatrics locations, as well as on the Mobile Unit. Children do not have to be Open Door patients to benefit from this program.
Who needs a flu shot?
The CDC recommends flu immunization for everyone 6 months of age and older. Dr. William Ma, part of the Open Door Pediatrics team, reminds parents that children older than 6 months who have never been immunized for flu need two doses. In subsequent years, they will only need one. Children under age 5 and adults over age 65 are at higher risk of complications from flu, making immunization especially important for those age groups.
How can I protect a baby from flu?
How can you protect infants not yet old enough for the flu immunization? “For infants under the age of 6 months, who cannot be immunized, the best prevention is to immunize adults and children in the family. This lessens the risk of exposure for the infant,” says Ma.
Symptoms of flu
The vaccine reduces your chances of contracting flu, but it does not eliminate it. It is important to recognize the symptoms of flu even if you have been immunized. Those with flu often experience some or all of the following: fever or feeling feverish/chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, and fatigue. Not all people who have flu will experience a fever.Dr. Ma recommends that anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms stay home for at least 24 hours after fever is no longer present, except to seek medical care or other necessities. The fever should be gone 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medicine.Click here to learn more about reducing your flu risk.
