Important COVID-19 Testing Updates

With the rapid spread of the omicron variant and a widespread shortage of rapid tests, please note these important changes to testing offerings at Open Door’s no-cost community testing site, as well as within patient visits at medical sites.

Rapid tests currently unavailable at community testing site

Open Door’s no-cost community testing site (E. 29th St., Muncie) is temporarily unable to offer rapid tests due to state shortages. PCR tests remain available and are the most accurate test offered. When testing asymptomatic people, they are a more accurate test than rapid. To schedule a PCR test*, visit www.opendoorhs.org/covid19-testing or call 211. Appointments required. While we anticipate receiving more rapid tests soon, we cannot guarantee a timeframe or quantity.

Changes to rapid test eligibility at community site

Due to shortages, the state has issued new guidance on who can receive a RAPID test at state-contracted sites, which includes our E. 29th St. community site. Once in stock, rapid tests at this site will be limited to the following, until further notice:

> Ages 18 and under
> Ages 50 and up, with symptoms

Testing within a patient visit

At all Open Door medical sites, including Urgent Care, all testing within a patient visit is at the discretion of your provider. Your provider will decide if a test is needed and which type. We encourage sick individuals to contact their provider. (Any testing within a patient visit is not part of the no-cost community testing program. Costs may apply and are billed to insurance when applicable. The age limits described above do not apply to patient visits.)

If you are asymptomatic and need a rapid test, visit https://www.coronavirus.in.gov/covid19-testing or call 211 to find a site that may offer rapid tests.

Employers/Organization leaders

If you require testing as clearance for someone to work or be in school, please plan for test results to take a few days to be available, as PCR may be the test used.

Vaccination and masking are critical

Your local healthcare workers need your help: please get vaccinated, and please mask around people you don’t live with. If you have concerns or questions about the vaccine, please talk to your provider. Talk with friends and family who are vaccinated and ask their experience. If you’re ready to schedule no-cost vaccination, visit https://www.opendoorhs.org/covid19-vaccine or call 211.

*PCR results are sent in 2-5 days. While waiting for results, mask — if you’re symptomatic or someone you live with tested positive, quarantine.
