Welcoming Dr. Afshan Jabeen!

Open Door Pediatrics welcomes Dr. Afshan Jabeen to our team! Dr. Jabeen will provide pediatric care at Open Door White River in Muncie and is accepting new patients.

Dr. Jabeen attended medical school at Dow Medical College in the city of Karachi, Pakistan. She and her husband moved to the United States in 2010, and Dr. Jabeen completed her medical residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio.

An experience during medical school convinced Dr. Jabeen to pursue pediatrics. While working with a family, she met a child who was paralyzed due to an autoimmune disease. She had the chance to care for the child and walk alongside the family to help them understand the situation and participate in their child’s care. Eventually, the child recovered and was able to walk out of the doctor’s office. The memory of working with this family continues to influence how she provides care today.

“I really like spending time with my patients and their family members. It’s important to me to get to know them and develop that relationship,” says Dr. Jabeen. “I want them to feel like I’ve listened and given them a chance to help create the treatment plan. I want them to feel confident about what to watch for at home and who to call if things change.”

After nearly 20 years as a provider, Dr. Jabeen understands that patient wellbeing involves more than medical care. She is particularly interested in mental health and has invested time and resources to complete a primary care psychiatry fellowship through the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. She also completed Patient-Centered Mental Health in Pediatric Primary Care training through the REACH Institute. She greatly values that Open Door behavioral health providers offer therapy and counseling onsite at Open Door White River, working with medical providers to make sure medical care and behavioral health care are coordinated. This is often called “integrated care,” and it’s an important way the Open Door team cares for patients’ whole-person health.

“One of the reasons I chose to join Open Door is the easy access the health center provides to resources my patients need,” Dr. Jabeen says. “I am able to connect them to a person, not just a department. That kind of warm hand-off is important to me. It improves outcomes and is a lot less intimidating for patients,” she said.

When Dr. Jabeen is not at Open Door working with patient families, she enjoys spending time with her own family – her husband, who also is a doctor, and her two elementary-aged daughters.
