Summer Food Support for Kids in Anderson and Muncie

During the school year, many kids rely on free or reduced-priced breakfasts and lunches for their meals. But what about during the summer?

There are multiple options in Muncie and Anderson for kids under 18 to have access to good food over summer break. Support is provided by the Summer Food Service Program, a federal nutrition program funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered by the Indiana Department of Education.

New Benefit Program: Indiana SUN Bucks

SUN Bucks is a new program in 2024 to help families buy groceries for their school-aged children during the summer. The program is provided by the Indiana Department of Education and the Family and Social Services Administration.

Families can get $120 in SUN Bucks to buy groceries for each eligible child. Most eligible families will get these benefits automatically, but some parents will need to apply. This new program is available in addition to free meals that kids of all ages can get at summer meal sites in their communities. Muncie Community Schools and Chartwells: Free breakfasts and lunches are provided Monday through Friday to anyone under the age of 18. See below for locations and times. Meals must be eaten onsite. All locations are closed on June 19 and July 4.

  Monday–Friday, June 3–July 26
  Breakfast: 7:45–8:45 a.m.
  Lunch: 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

• Northside Middle School
  Monday–Friday, June 3–July 18

Muncie YMCA: As part of its anti-hunger program, the YMCA offers free meals at Tuhey Park to anyone under the age of 18. Meals are provided Monday through Friday, 3–4 p.m., and must be eaten onsite at the park. Closed on July 4th.

Lunch is served between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Food must be eaten in the cafeteria. Adult meals and a la cart items are not available for purchase. Closed on July 4th.
