ODHS Celebrates World Breastfeeding Week

August 10, 2017 – Muncie, IN - Open Door Health Services celebrated World Breastfeeding Week with a great community event. This was the first year for the event and the turnout was encouraging! 50 moms, babies, and children attended the event. They were able to learn more about breastfeeding and receive support from various community resources. 20 moms were fitted and received brand new nursing bras and the Lactation Consultant weighed and measured 10 babies.

In addition to the educational opportunities, the event provided some fun for moms and their babies. 6 giveaway bags full of breastfeeding essentials and fun gifts were raffled off. Food and good conversations between the moms was also a fun element of the event.

Sabrina Haggard, WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator, had this to say about the event, “I was pleased with how the event went. I think moms liked having an event that allowed them to learn about resources in the community and be with other moms. It has inspired me to start a Weight Check Wednesday in our community.  This would be an open time where moms could come and get their baby weighed and be able to speak to a lactation consultant about any concerns.”

Open Door would like to say a special thank you to the Delaware County WIC Department for making this event possible. They put in a lot of time, energy, and passion into this event and it showed. Also, another special thank you to Casa Del Sol, The Mother’s Milk Bank, Mommyxpress, Purdue Extension, and First Choice for Women for supporting and attending the event.

Overall, this event was a great success! Open Door looks forward to seeing it continue to grow and be a resource of support and encouragement for breastfeeding moms in the years to come.
